Cowpeas (Akkerbone)

General Information:

  • Cowpeas have an indefinite growth habit. Early plantings thus yield more vegetative growth and later plantings more reproductive growth (more pods),
  • Planting depth – not deeper than 5cm,
  • Plant in Nov/Dec for hay production and Dec/Jan for grain production,
  • Cut hay as soon as 25% of the pods have discolored,
  • Harvest grain as soon as 75% is dry.

  • Days to harvest – 90-110,
  • Suitable for hay and grain,
  • Plant 15kg/ha.

  • Creeper,
  • Days to flower – 60-70,

  • Highly suitable for hay,
  • Plant 10kg/ha.

  • Creeper,
  • Days to flower – 60-70,
  • Days to harvest – 120,
  • Suitable for grain and hay,
  • Plant 10kg/ha.

Dr Saunders:

  • Upright,
  • Days to flower – 55-60,
  • Days to harvest – 110,
  • Suitable for grain and hay,
  • Plant 15-20kg/ha.

Mixed:

  • Creeper,
  • Days to flower – 60-70,
  • Days to harvest – 120,
  • Suitable for grain and hay,
