Characteristics:

Rival:

  • Early maturing (14 weeks), summer turnip,
  • Excellent leaf production and leaf holding Tankard shaped bulb with high proportion above ground Short term, one graze, summer crop.,
  • Rival is ideally used as part of a pasture renovation programme within dairy farms that have a period of dry or a loss of pasture quality through January and February,
  • Time to first grazing: 12-14 weeks,
  • White flesh with tinkered bulb.

Australian purple top:

  • 12-14 weeks to mature,
  • Summer turnip,
  • Increased tolerance to drought,
  • Purple top white base bulb-type turnip,
  • Suggested sowing time: Sept – Jan.

New York:

  • Modern version of a traditional autumn and early winter feed turnip,
  • Performed well as a later-holding summer turnip,
  • Summer turnips should never make up more than 5 kg DM/Day, or one third of a milking cow’s diet,
  • White flesh with oval bulb.
